October - Insects

Many homeowners can keep the insect population under control with a strong jet of water from a hose. If you survey your yard you will see the damage starting. There are many ways of taking care of the problems. Soaps are available and the least toxic formula for controlling insects and other pests.

If you would like to use a more friendly solution you can use a household treatment. The least toxic formula for controlling pests would be to use 3 Tablespoons of dishwashing liquid (do not use those containing degreaser or automatic dishwasher soap.) per gallon of water and apply to plants. Repeat in one week and later as needed.

If insects are damaging plants determine what type of damage is being done and check with your nursery and apply the correct insecticide. Be careful to cover underside of leaves. Keep checking the plant and if it needs it apply again.

Be careful with systemic insecticides. They are absorbed by the plant making it toxic to certain pests. (See enclosed information on insecticide). They are primarily effective against small sucking insects and spider mites.
